Mr. Morton passed on in November of 2005.
We are keeping this page up as a tribute to a wonderful cat and
a very special friend.
Mr. Morton's full name
is Morton Downey, Jr. He was named after the television star,
Morton Downey, since as a kitten he had a big mouth and a bad
attitude. Mr. Morton has aged gracefully. Now almost 17 years
old, he is the delight of all of Shirley's guests, both at home
and at the store. He greets all with a "Meow", and
maybe a hand-shake. He has been obedience trained to shake hands,
sit up, bang-plays dead, knows dog commands such as come, sit,
stay, heel, etc, though doing them may be an option that depends
on how good the cookies are.
Mr. Morton was a rescue,
barely 2 months old when Shirley rescued him from one of the
busiest streets in Houston, TX. He was raised with Australian
Terriers, Great Danes and an Otter Hound. Although he has never
attended a Tica cat show, he was awarded "1st Place Best
Sleeper" in
a photo contest at a recent TICA cat show. He also appeared
at Houston Cat Club shows as Oldest Cat at 15 and 16 years of
age.
What better animal than
Mr. Morton to pick cat toys? Certainly, with over 15 years of experience,
no cat is better qualified to find the most enjoyable toys you can
buy for your kitty.
UPDATE: June, 2004
Mr. Morton is not doing well, and we sincerely hope he will make
it for another year. He retired and is staying at home now, but
is still in reasonably good health for his age. He has assigned
all his toy picking duties to Shirley's new LaPerm, CHA Reddazzle
BC Sweet Tyler. Tyler said we should keep Morton's name on the
toys, though, as he is still in training.
